How to Order Food in Japanese: A Beginner Conversation
Order a dish, ask for water and request the bill in Japanese. Practice a short restaurant conversation with kana, romaji and English meanings.
Food and drink
For a simple food order, point to the menu and say これをください (kore o kudasai), “This, please.” If you know the dish name, put it in place of これ: ラーメンをください (raamen o kudasai), “Ramen, please.” One reusable pattern is enough to begin.
Get attention and choose a dish
すみません (sumimasen, excuse me) can get a server’s attention. Once they are ready, say the item name followed by をください. For example, うどんをください (udon o kudasai) requests udon.
これ (kore) refers to something near you, so pointing to a menu entry makes the reference clear. Do not expect the server to identify “this” without a gesture or visible context. Some restaurants use a ticket machine or table ordering system instead of a spoken order.
Ask for one or two
ひとつ (hitotsu) means one item and ふたつ (futatsu) means two in a general counting pattern. これをひとつください (kore o hitotsu kudasai) means “One of these, please.” These forms are a useful beginning even though Japanese has more specific counters.
For water, お水をください (omizu o kudasai) is a simple request. Add the polite お to 水 (mizu, water) in this common expression. You do not need to put お before every noun you use.
Ask again when you miss something
A server’s reply may be faster than your practice sentence. もう一度お願いします (mou ichido onegaishimasu) means “One more time, please.” ゆっくりお願いします (yukkuri onegaishimasu) asks them to go slowly.
If you did not understand, say すみません、わかりません (sumimasen, wakarimasen, sorry, I do not understand). It is more useful to make the difficulty clear than to answer はい to a question you have not understood.
Try the whole exchange
You: すみません。これをひとつください。 (Sumimasen. Kore o hitotsu kudasai. Excuse me. One of these, please.) Server: はい。 (Hai. Certainly.) You: お水もお願いします。 (Omizu mo onegaishimasu. Water too, please.) Here も means “also.”
When you are ready to pay, try お会計をお願いします (okaikei o onegaishimasu). Payment arrangements differ, so follow the staff’s directions. Review the exchange by swapping only the dish name; keeping the rest stable makes practice manageable.
