Last updated

KonKon Japanese is run by an individual developer based in Japan. You can learn without an account, or sign in with Google to sync your progress across devices. We do not sell your data or use it for advertising. This page explains the details.

1. At a glance

  • Guest learning requires no account; an optional Google account lets you sync progress.
  • Guest progress stays on your device. Signed-in progress is also stored in our Cloudflare D1 database.
  • Google sign-in gives us your Google account identifier, name, email address and profile image, if available.
  • Like every website, requests pass through our hosting provider, Cloudflare, which keeps technical logs.
  • We do not show advertising, and we do not use cookies to track you.

2. Your learning progress

The lessons you have finished, your XP and the cards waiting for review are stored in your browser's local storage. Without sign-in, this progress is not sent to our database. If you sign in, the app combines your guest progress with your account progress and stores a copy in Cloudflare D1 to sync it.

Guest progress does not follow you to another browser or device and can be lost if you clear site data. Signed-in progress is also kept on our server, so you can continue on another device. You can export or import a JSON backup from your profile. Signing out leaves the account's local copy on that browser.

Google handles the sign-in step under its own privacy policy. We store your account identity, login session, provider tokens used for authentication and synced learning data in Cloudflare D1. We use this data only to authenticate you and sync your learning. We do not request access to Google Drive, Gmail or your contacts.

3. Listening to Japanese

When you play a word or character aloud, the app uses the speech synthesis built into your browser. The app itself does not record your voice and does not send any audio or text to us.

Depending on your browser and operating system, the browser or system may use an external, online voice service to produce the sound. That is handled by your browser or operating system under its own privacy terms, not by us.

4. Hosting and server logs

KonKon Japanese is delivered by Cloudflare. When your browser requests a page or an image, Cloudflare processes technical information about the request, such as your IP address, the page requested, the time, and your browser's user agent. Cloudflare uses this to deliver the site, keep it secure (for example, to block attacks and abuse) and keep it running. We do not combine this information with anything else to identify you.

Cloudflare may process this data in countries other than your own. See Cloudflare's privacy policy for how it handles data.

5. Visitor statistics

When enabled, we use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits and see which pages are used, so we can improve the app. It does not use cookies or local storage, does not follow you across other websites, and gives us only totals, such as the number of page views, not information about individual people.

6. Offline use

To let lessons open quickly and work without a connection, the app installs a service worker that saves copies of pages and images in your browser's cache on your device. These copies contain only the app's own content, not information about you, and they are replaced when the app is updated.

7. Cookies

Signing in sets an essential session cookie so we can recognize your account. It is not an advertising cookie. Cloudflare may also set strictly necessary security cookies, such as when it checks that a visitor is not an automated attack.

Where laws such as the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) apply, we process the technical data described above on the basis of our legitimate interests: delivering the site, keeping it secure, and understanding in aggregate how it is used. If you choose Google sign-in, we process your account and progress data to provide the account sync you requested. Guest progress remains on your device.

9. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask for access to, correction of, or deletion of personal data about you, to object to or restrict its processing, and to complain to your local data protection authority.

If you have signed in, we hold the account and progress data described above. Signing out or clearing browser data does not delete the server copy. Server logs are kept by Cloudflare as described in its own policy.

Deleting your data

You can erase the device copy by clearing your browser's site data for this site. This does not delete a signed-in account or its server copy. You can permanently delete your account and synced data from your profile while signed in. A recent Google sign-in may be needed to confirm deletion; download a backup first if you want to keep a copy. Deleting the account does not remove separate guest progress on your device.

10. Children

KonKon Japanese is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.

11. Changes to this policy

If we add features that handle more data, such as payments, we will update this policy before they go live. The date at the top of this page shows when it last changed.
